How Common Is Cancer In Golden Retrievers?
A friend told me that the incidence of cancer in Goldens has risen and eventually 50% will develop some form of cancer. Does anyone have the true facts on this?

Goldens and Boxers are cancer factories unfortuanatly. Cancer. Recent surveys show that cancer is the #1 cause of death in golden retrievers. Their cancer rates equal some of the breeds long thought to lead the way in incidents of cancer, such as Boxers. This may be the greatest tragedy of the golden retriever in the 1990s. Cancers such as hemangiosarcoma (cancer of the blood) and lymphosarcoma (cancer of the lymphatic system) lead the list of killers of goldens. The breed’s average lifespan is now down to 10 1/2 years.

We have not seen a dramatic rise in cancer in well bred Golden’s at all. By we I mean any of the people I associate with who are good and responsible Golden breeders. To claim a rise of 50% is way off the mark and may only pertain to BYB goldens or those that are PuppyMill dogs.
Good and responsible breeders would never breed any Golden who has a predisposition to produce dogs/puppies with any illness in thier lines. That is contrary to our standards to have healthy and sound dogs.
Those who are out to make money and that is their main goal in breeding don’t care and will continue to breed their dogs reguardless of health or temperment.
ADD: amazing to me that you should pull out a few statements and post them out of context and then state that all Goldens and boxers are cancer factories. If you read the entire statement then what I have posted rings more true than yours. Good and responsible breeds do all the genitic testing and they do a complete study as to their breeding programs.
Any dog is badly bred will have a high rate of any health issues!
Once again it is the good and responsible breeder who breeds for the betterment of the breed taking into consideration all the possible health problems before any breeding is allowed to happen.
I feel it is very irresponsible to post something as fact when it is taken out of context and not accompined by the entire statement.
Just my opinion!

Not fifty percent, but it is high. Any purebred is more prone to disease than a mix. Goldens are wonderful dogs, but are prone to allergies, cancers, hip issues, and thyroid problems. Those issues just become more common when a genepool is limited because they are all related to the auto-immune system. Hip dysplasias are also genetic disorders of the skeletal system.

What type of cancer? That is untrue. But all dogs are at a higher risk for cancer because they are living longer. It is one of the most prevalent killers of all breeds of senior dogs.
Feed your dog a high quality diet and exercise and you can be in the lucky half!!

I have read that before, too, only the number was 85% in the article that I read. It’s impossible for me to tell you if it’s true, but cancer is very common in Golden Retrievers. In my opinion, we have all those people who breed dogs that have no business being bred to thank for this…people who think that making money is more important than creating quality dogs. You see a lot of them asking questions on this site.
